Introduction summary  

Cambridge Consultants is one of the world’s leading technology innovation and product development companies, with a reputation for business transformation and value creation for an international client base.  Our business in the Consumer market is growing and we are seeking to complement our commercial team with an aspiring Business Developer who we can partner with members of our senior team to scale their impact and to enable us to develop new commercial talent. This is the ideal role for somebody with a technical background who is looking to develop their commercial and business skills and experience and ultimately to operate as a Business Developer within a high value professional services company. 

The role includes a range of tasks centred around understanding market trends, identifying opportunities with clients, driving and closing sales, managing accounts and ensuring that our clients are successful.  

We’re interested in talking to candidates with a background in innovation and technology who are looking to develop a career in business development and account management in the consumer space, that could include FMCG/CPG, consumer electronics, audio or other market verticals in the future. You might have already started to move your career in this direction and be looking for more opportunity to learn within a strong commercial team environment or you might currently be in a scientific or technical role and looking to make a change. Either way this role will provide mentoring, skills development and hands on practical opportunities to quickly develop your career. 

 

About the job  

As a member of the commercial team you will take a leading role in our global activities, and be responsible for significant new business development, marketing strategy, client relationship development, account management and contract negotiation working with colleagues.

  • An example of a disruptive physical/digital innovation  
  • An example of a wearable using low power, low latency communication technology 
  • Overview of our work in biotech which is increasingly relevant to FMCG/CPG companies  

  

Working alongside world class project managers and technical leads, you will shape potential client projects and remain close to the delivery so you can help identify follow on opportunities and account growth.  

You will use your strong technical and market understanding skills to help communicate what Cambridge Consultants can deliver to potential clients and bring together the right team to address their challenges.  

We have a range of training that you’ll be able to benefit from in your first few years specifically focused at developing commercial skills.  Training topics range from communication, negotiating, contract law, successful networking, marketing and pitching.  We have taught and practical and mentoring aspects to help you rapidly develop your skills and put these into practice on real opportunities. 

Whilst this position is based in Cambridge, UK, there will be international travel.  

 

Requirements  

We would love to hear from you, especially if you have a combination of:   

  • A strong technical background (educated including to degree level or higher), together with some experience in R&D, design, manufacturing or digital services.  
  • Enthusiasm and energy to develop your career to become a commercial leader. 
  • An aspiration to take this experience and apply it to a wider range of companies in the aforementioned industry sectors, creating novel products and services with the support of an outstanding global technical team. 
  • A background in one/more of our target sectors is an advantage.
