What are we working on?

We believe that biology is going to be at the centre of the next industrial revolution. Some examples of some of our more recent exciting and challenging projects we have worked on include:

System design of a fully automated larvae rearing system for processing food waste into high value protein for animal feedstock:

Creating robust bioprocessing scale-down models:

Biology-based contaminant monitoring: Creating high-sensitivity, ultra-low cost sensors from living organisms:

Part of this role is to represent bioprocessing in the sale and execution of similar projects. As industrial biotech is a growth area for Cambridge Consultants, the other part of the role will be to contribute to the formation of our growth strategy, capability building and business development activities.

What will you be doing?

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and entrepreneurial scientist or engineer to contribute to the growth of a new business area and achieve excellent results within fast-moving industries. You will be using your skills and significant experience to help steer our growth in industrial biotech and to contribute to technology development projects; from initial idea generation through to the delivery and support for market ready technologies. This may include:

  • Taking part in business development activities, such as attending industry events
  • Communicating with clients to understand their goals
  • Designing and leading technology and product development projects
  • Carrying out research into cutting-edge science, technologies, and markets
  • Taking part in concept generation and problem-solving workshops
  • Designing and leading the execution of experimental programmes
  • Evaluating ideas using evidence from modelling (e.g. CFD, reaction kinetics)…or using the latest data analysis methods on experimentally obtained evidence from analytical test equipment
  • Input into detailed designs or solutions, from biosynthetic pathways to downstream processes
  • Building prototype systems in our labs, or liaising with suppliers 

What can you bring?

A successful candidate will have a strong ability to:

  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams to sell and execute challenging projects
  • Communicate with peers and clients to understand their problems and present thinking
  • Use scientific and engineering first principles to solve complex problems related to industrial processes
  • Create and propose elegant industrial bioprocess solution alternatives, from component to system level
  • Obtain and analyse simulated/empirical test data to gain insights into system and component performance

The following skills and experiences are advantageous, but not essential:

  • Process sensing, monitoring and control
  • Process scale-up methodologies
  • Design of experiment for strain screening and scale-up optimisation
  • Fermentation science at scale
  • Biochemical engineering
