Are you a curious and creative design student looking for new experiences? Do you have a passion for technology and enjoy being part of a multi-disciplinary team? Would you like to work on a wide selection of products and services for clients in the Industrial, Consumer, Energy and Defence industries?

We’re looking for a designer with a good understanding of the user centred design process, outstanding graphical presentation skills in 2D, proficient in 3D design and rendering and with excellent verbal communication and visual story telling capabilities.

If that sounds like you, we are hiring a 12-month design intern, with a flexible start date between June and September 2023. The deadline for applications is the 28th February 2023 and application will not be reviewed ahead of this date.

The Role

The Mechanics and Design Department undertakes the development of products and services from concept to manufacture whilst addressing considerable technical and design problems.

We combine user centred design, innovative mechanical engineering, a rigorous analytical approach to problem solving and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.

Some examples of our recent exciting and challenging projects we have worked on include:

Midi: User centred design of a novel ‘device plus chemistry’ approach to Women’s shaving

Alma: a portable cooling case which gives the patient more social flexibility through their IVF process

Development of “Pebble”, a product which provides drug-free relief from menopausal hot flushes:

What you'll be doing

This is an excellent opportunity for a design student with the passion and ability to achieve excellent results within highly demanding industries under tough commercial and time constraints. You will be using your design skills to contribute to development projects with support and guidance from seniors, from initial idea generation through to the delivery and manufacturing support for market ready products. This may include:

  • Carrying out and presenting user research to multidisciplinary teams
  • Participating in, and leading concept generation and problem-solving workshops
  • Graphics and visual communication design to improve understanding and drive engagement with important documents
  • Preparing designs at a range of fidelities i.e., from analogue sketch to a detailed 3D render
  • Manufacturing of prototypes, hands-on or by liaising with suppliers
  • Evaluating ideas and prototypes with feedback from users and stakeholders

Your Experience

A successful design intern in the Mechanics and Design Department will have:

  • Confidence with a range of graphical presentation tools e.g. Creative Cloud, hand sketching, 3D rendering
  • Evidence of the ability to use CAD tools to design attractive, functional and manufacturable designs
  • An understanding of human/user centred design processes
  • Excellent verbal and written storytelling/ idea communication skills
  • Evidence of having been flexible when working with other disciplines

Interns gain invaluable hands-on experience by working alongside our staff on real projects. It’s also a chance to show us what you can do – internships can sometimes lead to the offer of a full-time job once you’ve completed your studies, therefore we invite applications from people who may be interested in applying for a full time job with us after their degree.

Some of our excellent benefits include a good salary (pro-rata), free canteen - lunches and refreshments, flexible working hours, and access to the social committee.
