Head of Business Development – China

Cambridge Consultants is expanding our global business in China, and is looking for an experienced Business Developer to lead the way. This is an exciting and varied role enabling one of the world’s premier technology research and development companies to expand in a new region.

To be successful in this role, you should have a track record selling high-value and innovative technology or technology related services to the Technology, Industrial, Energy, and Consumer sectors.  Focus areas within these sectors are to be agreed, but from our global business could include automation/autonomy,  AI/ML, wireless technologies, digital service innovation and semiconductor technology.

With a focus on developing our business in China, this is a great opportunity for a true business go-getter with a global perspective and an entrepreneurial approach. You should have work experience in both Chinese and Western companies, and a passion for building bridges between cultures and businesses.  Key objectives will center on new client acquisition for Cambridge Consultants’ cutting-edge technology innovation and development services.

Cambridge Consultants is a leading global provider of technology R&D and strategic consulting services, headquartered in the UK and with its Asia HQ in Singapore.  We deliver highly innovative technology developments and technology related strategic advice for clients across the globe, including well-known brands and emerging technology start-ups.   We work on client projects as a team, combining the feel of working in a start-up with the resources and support of a globally successful company.  Project delivery teams are typically based in in Singapore, Cambridge (UK) or Boston (USA) offices, with multi-office and multi-disciplinary teams working collaboratively. 

Business Development is a broad role here, including defining our commercial strategy, building a network of contacts, direct engagement with those contacts and you will often stay part of the team throughout the lifetime of projects. In helping our clients to realize their ambitions, you will make a real difference with direct contribution to the solution, and you’ll have both the freedom and backing to drive business success.  

You will work closely with our Singapore office team to build our strategy in China, by identifying who we should be targeting and where the opportunity for Cambridge Consultants is greatest.

In this role, you will have responsibility for accelerating Cambridge Consultants’ sales in China and developing a substantial professional fee-for-service business delivering technology development and consulting projects to MNCs, China-based companies, and emerging Chinese start-ups, in collaboration with our teams in Asia and globally.

This is an entrepreneurial role which requires a candidate with the drive, energy and market knowledge to establish a successful base for future development for our China business.  You must have a passion for the development of innovative, disruptive technologies and products that deliver substantial commercial impact, including many world firsts. Your understanding of such technologies and your commercial business experience will enable you to be trusted by clients and internal teams to guide the creation of valuable propositions and to close deals.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to our strategy and business development plan in China
  • Business development on the ground in China for our WDS and ICE divisions, driving the approach to achieve demonstrable results
  • Developing strong and trusting relationships with senior executives in client and potential client companies
  • Engaging with client and prospect organizations to understand how cutting-edge concepts and ideas can be applied to drive breakthrough innovation for them.
  • Working alongside world class technical specialists with state-of-the-art labs, you will share responsibility for the delivery of successful projects to our clients with our technical and program management colleagues, working together as one team.
  • Raising awareness of the value of the professional services that Cambridge Consultants can deliver in a broad range of technology-focused markets.
  • Identifying and engaging with companies that are potential clients for Cambridge Consultants, actively utilising market information to guide and support our strategy and internal investments
  • Actively collaborating with other parts of our business to promote the capabilities of WDS and ICE, and draw on the capabilities of the wider organisation, to better serve our clients

What you need to succeed:

The successful applicant will be a talented, ambitious, and entrepreneurial individual with a desire to create and lead new business activities, and a passion for technology innovation. There is a need to be comfortable working remotely and as an individual, whilst being collaborative with colleagues in our other global offices.

ESSENTIAL:

  • Ability to develop business in high-tech market sectors, working alongside other business development, project management and technical staff
  • Provide effective leadership and (where relevant) team management to drive business growth
  • Experience and proven track record of complex, high-value, technical sales / business development in China
  • Ability to personally close substantial sales in collaboration with project teams
  • Experience of consultative selling
  • Market knowledge of technologies relevant to the future of high-performance technology applications in one or more of the following areas: automation and autonomy, AI, advanced mobility and transport, semiconductors, aerospace
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Mandarin and English fluency

DESIRABLE:

  • Existing senior relationships with China-based technology companies (including start-ups and MNCs with significant operations in China)
  • Market sector knowledge in the technology, industrial and/or consumer sector, focusing on technology, product and services innovation
  • A strong technical expertise foundation to establish credibility with customers
  • A degree in an appropriate technical domain
  • Experience taking business through the full account lifecycle from acquisition through project fulfilment to scaling.
