We are looking for an experienced Electrical Wiring / Mechanical Assembly Technician to enhance our mechanical assembly capabilities, to assist our project engineering teams in the specification, assembly and inspection of a wide range of product developments from one off proof of concept designs, through test rigs and prototype assembly to box-built client deliverable hardware.

The Role

The Prototype Development workshop offers a wide range of services from cable assembly, machine wiring, rig and machine build, prototyping and series manufacture, manual and CNC milling, manual and CNC turning, sheet metal fabrication, welding, sand blasting, surface grinding and spark erosion.

You will join a team of technicians providing design support, manufacturing expertise and assembly resource to our project teams across a wide range of product designs. The key aspect of the role will focus on the electrical wiring and mechanical assembly with a wider remit to assist with equipment maintenance and provide support to the other team members across a wide range of disciplines.

What you can bring

  • Excellent knowledge of wiring and cable assembly. You should be experienced in the selection, preparation and installation of different types of wire and cables in a safe and neat manner.
  • Experience of low voltage AC and DC systems, single phase power distribution, 3 phase wiring and safety critical systems
  • The ability to create and understand wiring information such as wiring diagrams, cable lists etc.
  • Hand skills. Proficient with hand tools especially connector crimp tool, be able to improvise but not compromise on quality.
  • Soldering. The ability to solder to a high standard. Not just PCBs and electronic components but larger wires and more ‘unusual’ items.
  • Connectors. You should have extensive knowledge of and the ability to specify appropriate connectors and more importantly be able to populate and assemble them correctly.

The following would be advantageous, but not essential:

  • Experience working to BS Electrical Wiring regulations
  • Experience with PAT testing and safety inspections.
  • Experience with BS Electrical standards and approved codes of practice
  • Knowledge of and experience working with IPC standards for electronic assembly
  • Experience of working to ISO9001 and ISO13485 quality systems
  • Experience of safe wiring and construction of equipment to standards such as IEC 60335 (Household Appliances), IEC 61010 (Laboratory Equipment) or IEC 62368 (Information Technology Equipment)
  • Understanding of how to reduce electromagnetic interference through layout and shielding
