We are looking for an enthusiastic and inquisitive Physicist to join our team.

As a physicist working within our Industrial, Consumer and Energy division you will attack complex problems in a wide range of industries by applying your fundamental physical understanding and your drive and curiosity to learn new things.

You will have a passion for innovation and technology and be motivated by the idea of applying your theoretical knowledge and experimental excellence to real-world engineering.

What we can offer

This role will offer a wide variety of technical challenges and opportunities for personal development. It will involve both practical and desk-based work in a wide range of areas, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to define and execute technical programmes which inform product and system design and answer the wider commercial objectives of the project.

The projects we work on are highly diverse and you will combine your existing skills and knowledge with an appetite to rapidly identify and assimilate whatever new information is necessary to solve the problem at hand. Examples of recent work undertaken include:

  • Teardown and reverse engineering of complex high power laser instrument for industrial application
  • Survey of atomic sensors for ultra high sensitivity EM field measurements
  • Design of moulded optical components for highly space and cost-constrained applications in industrial and consumer devices
  • Design and development of inductive sensing system for a high volume consumer product
  • Technical analysis of superconducting power distribution system
  • Piezo motor prototyping for next-gen miniaturised consumer product

Opportunities for development and progression are varied and will be tailored to the interests, experience and skills of the successful candidate, with scope to develop increased technical, commercial and/or programme expertise and leadership.

What you can bring

You will have a first degree and/or PhD in physics or a closely related discipline, combined with excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and a collaborative approach.

Experience in the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Industry experience in commercial product development
  • Knowledge of optical system design, including imaging, metrology and sensing applications
  • Wide-ranging experience with sensor technologies and their practical implementation
  • Experience with numerical modeling for optical, electromagnetic, or fluidic simulation, and generic software tools such as Matlab and Python
  • Broad understanding of other engineering disciplines, including electronics, software and mechanical engineering
