We are looking for an experienced Optical Physicist to join our team within the Industrial, Consumer & Energy division.

Optics is an established capability at Cambridge Consultants, and we are looking for experienced practitioners who can apply their skills to a broad range of optical engineering challenges. You will have a passion for innovation and technology and be motivated by the idea of applying your theoretical knowledge and experimental excellence to real-world engineering.

What we can offer

This role will offer a broad range of technical challenges and opportunities for personal development. Projects at CC span a wide variety of optics sub specialisms and you will combine your existing skills and knowledge with an appetite to develop expertise in new areas.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to define and execute technical programmes which inform product and system design and answer the wider commercial objectives of the project. Tasks will range from desk-based analysis through to prototyping and development in our dedicated optical laboratory. Examples of recent work undertaken include:

  • Teardown and reverse engineering of complex high power laser instrument for industrial application, with demanding spatial and temporal modulation requirements
  • Design of moulded optical components for highly space and cost-constrained applications in industrial and consumer devices
  • Design and prototyping of high-precision interferometric metrology system for industrial application
  • Algorithm development for machine vision applications, including fusion of low-resolution depth and high-resolution RGB data to create high-resolution depth maps
  • Hands-on technical due diligence on an automotive lidar system
  • Development of low-cost, low power eye-tracking system based on fusion of video and electro-oculography signals
  • Construction of optical atomic magnetometer demonstrator
  • Survey of solar PV materials for high altitude applications

Opportunities for development and progression are varied and will be tailored to the interests, experience and skills of the successful candidate, with scope to develop increased technical, commercial and/or programme expertise and leadership.

What you can bring

You will have a first degree and/or PhD in optical physics, preferably combined with industry experience in commercial product development, as well as excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and a collaborative approach.

In addition, knowledge in the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Wide-ranging experience with sensor technologies and their practical implementation
  • Broad understanding of other engineering disciplines, including electronics, software and mechanical engineering
