We are looking for talented and creative physicists. We are looking for a range of experience levels, from graduates to experienced subject matter experts.

Working in the Physics and Sensors group in Cambridge Consultant’s Medtech division you will be part of our development projects, contributing the hard science in a multidisciplinary project group.

What we can offer

You will have the opportunity to see your work contribute to the creation of new products in the medical technology sector that have a real positive impact on the lives of their users.

Cambridge Consultants undertakes development projects on behalf of a variety of clients, from small start-ups to large, multinationals all over the world. The developments projects we undertake are almost always difficult problems, but the technology content varies from one project to the next. You will get the opportunity to learn new skills and work on a wide range of technologies.

The type of project will also vary and therefore you may:

  • Carry out technology landscaping, working with our strategy analysts to provide insights that will inform a client’s strategic decisions
  • Analyse measurement problems or proposed technical solutions for clients to assess feasibility
  • Develop new medical technology products where scientific principles are turned into hardware, working with mechanical, electrical and software engineers, industrial designers and human factors specialists
  • Identify unmet needs in medical technology and create breakthrough technology demonstrators in internal projects

Our projects range from purely theoretical work to the conception, design, build and testing of hardware in our optical laboratory. We work in teams and you will always be working with colleagues on a project. Depending on your experience level you may carry out a defined task with support from a more experienced colleague; help define a task and carry it out in collaboration with peers; define a task and lead a small team of colleagues with similar skills or define a project and lead a team with a variety of skills, giving leadership and support to less experienced colleagues.

We will actively promote your career progression and you will get the opportunity to take on increasingly challenging tasks. You will have the opportunity to interact directly with clients as part of project work and when contributing to the sales effort providing technical insight.

While we take the quality of our work very seriously, you will find that we have an informal work environment and while work can be hectic when deadlines loom we care about having a healthy work-life balance. Pre and post pandemic, there is a lively social scene inside and outside the office, with many opportunities to socialise with colleagues.

What you can bring

Ideally you will have an excellent degree in Physics with strong technical skills. Key strengths in practical application of the sciences are essential, as well as experience of coding tools (e.g. Python, MATLAB).

You will be an enthusiastic team player with strong communication skills, as a major part of your role will be interacting with clients and multi-disciplinary project teams made up of scientists, engineers and designers.

The following are not required, but any experience in these areas would be advantageous:

  • Medical device industry experience
  • A post-graduate qualification with a high level of practical experience
  • Experience in simulation tools (Zemax, ANSYS)
