We are looking for a Senior Chemist/Materials Scientist to join our team.

Chemistry and Materials Science are growing capabilities at Cambridge Consultants, and we are looking for experienced scientists who can apply their skills to a wide range of engineering problems, and are excited by the prospect of being at the forefront of bringing skills from chemistry and materials to the development of leading-edge systems.

You will have a passion for innovation and technology and be motivated by the idea of applying your theoretical knowledge and experimental excellence to real-world engineering.

What we can offer

This role will offer a rich variety of technical challenges and opportunities for personal development. It will involve both practical and desk-based work in a wide range of projects, applying chemistry and materials science at the core of engineering solutions for our clients. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to define and execute technical programmes which inform product and system design and answer the wider commercial objectives of the project.

The projects we work on are highly diverse and you will combine your existing skills and knowledge with an appetite to rapidly identify and assimilate whatever new information is necessary to solve the problem at hand. Examples of recent work undertaken in the group include:

  • Reformulation of client products
  • Troubleshooting chemical incompatibility issues in robotic laboratory equipment
  • Advising blue chip clients on new applications for their materials portfolios
  • Research into efficient methods for carbon sequestration measurement
  • Assessment of production roadmaps for photovoltaic cells
  • Defining factory test methods for determining the quality of a polysaccharide film

Opportunities for development and progression are varied and will be tailored to the interests, experience and skills of the successful candidate, with scope to develop increased technical, commercial and/or programme expertise and leadership.

What you can bring

You will have a first degree and/or PhD in chemistry, materials science, or a closely related discipline. You will combine this with a broad understanding of a wide range of chemistry and materials principles, and an ability to identify their applicability to a variety of technical challenges.

You will have a desire to apply chemistry and materials science to real-world product developments, where a significant proportion of the work will be carried out within other disciplines.

The following are not required, but any experience in these areas would be advantageous:

  • Utilisation of chemistry or materials science in a commercial setting such as applied R&D or application engineering
  • Physical chemistry, including material properties, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics and electrochemistry
  • Transport phenomena and the practical application of chemistry to the behaviour and processing of fluids
  • An understanding of other scientific disciplines such as physics or biochemistry, and familiarity with design considerations arising from associated engineering disciplines (for example electronics, software or mechanical engineering)
