We are looking for talented, creative physicists and engineers with a background and interest in optics.

Working in the Physics and Sensors group in our Medical technology division you will be part of our development projects, contributing the hard science in a multidisciplinary project group.

What we can offer

You will have the opportunity to see your work contribute to the creation of new products in the medical technology sector that have a real positive impact on the lives of their users.

Cambridge Consultants undertakes development projects on behalf of a variety of clients, from small start-ups to large, multinationals all over the world. The development projects we undertake are almost always difficult problems, but the technology content varies from one project to the next. You will have the opportunity to learn new skills and work on a wide range of technologies.

The type of project will vary and therefore you may -

  • Carry out technology landscaping, working with our strategy analysts to provide insights that will inform a client’s strategic decisions
  • Analyse measurement problems or proposed technical solutions for clients to assess feasibility
  • Develop new medical technology products where scientific principles are turned into hardware, working with mechanical, electrical and software engineers, industrial designers and human factors specialists
  • Identify unmet needs in medical technology and create breakthrough technology demonstrators in internal projects

Our projects range from purely theoretical work to the conception, design, build and testing of hardware in our optical laboratory. We work in teams and you will always be working with and have the support of your colleagues on a project. We will actively promote your progression and provide you with the opportunity to take on increasingly challenging tasks. You will interact directly with clients as part of project work and when contributing to the sales effort providing technical insight.

While we take the quality of our work very seriously, you will find that we have an informal work environment and while work can be hectic when deadlines loom, we care about having a healthy work-life balance. Pre and post pandemic, there is a lively social scene inside and outside the office, with many opportunities to socialise with colleagues.

What you can bring

Ideally you will have a Master's degree in Optical Physics or a PhD in Optical physics as well as practical experience with optical breadboarding (e.g Thorlabs) including optical alignment. You will have experience of coding tools (e.g. Python, MATLAB), and experience in simulation tools (Zemax) both sequential and non-sequential systems.

You will be an enthusiastic team player with good communication skills, as a major part of your role will be interacting with clients and multi-disciplinary project teams made up of scientists, engineers and designers.

The following are not required, but any experience in these areas would be advantageous:

  • Experience in high performance (e.g. diffraction limited) imaging systems
  • You may have experience interfacing optical systems with microfluidics
  • Medical device industry experience would be advantageous, but not essential
