Introduction

Are you a curious and creative design student looking for new experiences? Do you have a passion for technology and enjoy being part of a multi-disciplinary team? Would you like to work on a wide selection of products and services for clients in the Industrial, Consumer, Energy and Defence industries?

We’re looking for a designer with a good understanding of the user centred design process, outstanding graphical presentation skills in 2D/3D and with excellent verbal communication and visual story telling capabilities.

If that sounds like you, we are hiring a 12-month design intern, with a flexible start date between July and September 2021. The deadline for applications is the 28th February 2021.

 

Role description

The Mechanics and Design Department undertakes the development of products and services from concept to manufacture whilst addressing considerable technical and design problems.

We combine user centred design, innovative mechanical engineering, a rigorous analytical approach to problem solving and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.

Specific responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for a design student with the passion and ability to achieve excellent results within highly demanding industries under tough commercial and time constraints. You will be using your design skills to contribute to development projects with support and guidance from seniors; from initial idea generation through to the delivery and manufacturing support for market ready products. This may include:

  • Carrying out and presenting user research to multidisciplinary teams
  • Participating in, and leading concept generation and problem-solving workshops
  • Preparing designs at various fidelities i.e. from analogue sketch to a detailed render
  • Manufacturing of prototypes, hands-on or by liaising with suppliers
  • Evaluating ideas and prototypes with feedback from users and stakeholders

 

Requirements

  • Confidence with a range of graphical presentation tools e.g. Creative cloud, Hand sketching, Digital rendering, Keyshot
  • Evidence of the ability to use CAD tools to design attractive, functional and manufacturable designs
  • An understanding of human/user centred design processes
  • Excellent verbal and written storytelling/ idea communication skills
  • Evidence of having been flexible when working with other disciplines
