Main purpose of the job

To manage challenging and often complex product developments for clients in a wide range of market sectors, covering the full Product Development Lifecycle from concept to manufacture.  You will work closely with clients and technical colleagues to define a programme of work, after which you will manage that project to conclusion – taking responsibility for achieving the project objectives within time and budget.

The Programme Manager role offers a high level of diversity and interest and includes working closely with other seniors within the Wireless and Digital Services Division to develop relationships with prospective clients and identify new business opportunities.

Cambridge Consultants is a world leader in wireless communications, with one of the largest independent wireless development teams in the world.  The group works across the entire wireless landscape - from high volume consumer applications such as portable internet-based devices, through to professional high-performance systems including the air traffic control radios used to govern US airspace.  This breadth of activity provides tremendous variety to our team members.  The markets that we address include telecommunications, healthcare, industrial, satellite, consumer and automotive.  Examples of our work include the first digital patient monitor in the medical WMTS band, the WiMAX PHY reference design adopted as the gold standard for European type approval testing, a professional intercom used at the Olympic Games and within professional broadcasting studios, satellite handsets, as well as key technologies fuelling the rollout of the latest cellular systems.

We’re working at the frontier of Machine Learning; a vital, transformative technology, developing systems that leverage deep learning techniques to achieve unprecedented performance in a huge range of applications. To support this, we have The Digital Greenhouse which is a purpose-built facility designed for discovering, developing and testing machine learning approaches in a fast, secure environment.

Specific responsibilities

Programme Managing development projects, typically consisting of multidisciplinary teams (including software, digital signal processing, RF, hardware, mechanics and production engineering).

Supporting the sales process, you will work with a small group of seniors to define a programme of work which solves a specific client need, for an agreed budget in an agreed time.

You will then lead a team of talented engineers to deliver that programme through the complete development lifecycle, from requirements definition through to final delivery.  Your specific responsibilities will be to track progress, monitor spend, keep the client informed of progress and ensure that risks and issues are managed along the way.  Projects will typically be up to £10M in value

Minimum requirements

Likely to have a good degree in engineering or Science, you will have substantial experience managing projects covering the full product development lifecycle.  Other requirements include;

  • Understanding of the product development process
  • Experience in managing products into manufacture
  • Experienced in managing multi-disciplinary NPD projects (RF, analogue, digital, software, mechanics)
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong financial control – both in estimating costs, and in tracking spend against plan

The following are an advantage:

  • Direct client facing experience
  • Working knowledge and experience of the wireless regulatory and type approval environment
  • Awareness of Project Management best practices (e.g. APM)
