Role description

The Mechanics and Design Department undertakes the development of products and services from concept to manufacture whilst addressing considerable technical and design challenges.

We combine user centred design, innovative mechanical engineering, a rigorous analytical approach to problem solving and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.

Specific responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for a design student with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results within highly demanding industries under tough commercial and time constraints. You will be using your design skills to contribute to development projects, from initial idea generation through to the delivery and manufacturing support for market ready products. This may include:

  • Carrying out and present user research to multidisciplinary teams
  • Taking part and lead concept generation and problem-solving workshops
  • Preparation of designs at various fidelities i.e. from analogue sketch to a detailed render
  • Manufacturing of prototypes, hands-on or by liaising with suppliers
  • Evaluating ideas and prototypes with feedback from users and stakeholders

 

Requirements

To be considered for the role, it is essential the candidate meets the following criteria:

  • A minimum of two years of attendance on an industrial or product design course
  • A basic knowledge of common design tools e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud, SolidWorks (or similar) and Keyshot
  • Excellent 2D graphic presentation  
  • Excellent digital and analogue sketch ideation and presentation skills
  • Ability communicate ideas clearly and concisely
  • A desire to “fly the flag” of design within a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to show empathy with users and a basic understanding of User Research processes/techniques

In addition, qualifications and experience in the following areas would be advantageous:

  • UX and UI design
  • Animation design
  • Design for Manufacture
  • Mechanism design
  • User interface wireframing tools
  • Experience using common design processes/techniques such as Design Thinking, User-Centred Design and User Story Mapping
  • Presentation for social and professional media
