We are looking for a consultative business developer to join our successful team at Cambridge Consultants to continue to grow our Defence and Security business, particularly with our UK Government clients. Ideally you will have a successful track record of delivering technical solutions in this sector and will have experience developing innovative development work for specific client needs.

Main purpose of the job

As an Account Manager, you will join an established team of commercial and technical experts working with a number of clients in the Defence and Security sector. This role has significant client contact, and you will use your knowledge gained to steer development of our core technology to our Defence & Security clients. You will define work programmes and develop the commercial approach to bids. You will be able to work on your own initiative and over time develop your own line of business. Developing key client relationships and repeat business built on trust is the cornerstone of our commercial approach and your responsibilities will include an important element of client management during project delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and build consultative relationships with key clients within the Defence & Security sector
  • Develop strong commercial relationships with key individuals within client and potential client organisations to enable further sales opportunities
  • Work collaboratively with our technical teams throughout the client journey
  • Interact with teams across the whole of Cambridge Consultants to bring the best technology to our clients to solve their problems
  • Build and maintain a deep domain knowledge

You will also use your strong technical skills to communicate what Cambridge Consultants can deliver to potential clients. Your background skills will also help you to make a significant contribution to the overall direction of development projects, often working on multiple projects at a time.

Whilst this position is based in Cambridge, UK, there will be significant travel in the UK.

Minimum requirements

Having a strong technical background, your career will include significant experience in an R&D or design role. You will have had some exposure to the commercial side of projects within this market area and you will possess detailed domain knowledge.

Previous experience of working in a consultancy, government agency or other ‘fee for service’ organisation would be an advantage.

To meet the requirements of this role you will have:

  • An excellent degree or PhD in a technical or science discipline
  • A passion for innovative technology solutions and for solving complex problems
  • A commercial understanding of what’s valuable to our clients
  • Experience working with clients in the Defence & Security sectors selling the type of work we do at Cambridge Consultants (see below for a description of the type of work we do in this division)

Type of work undertaken by division

The ICE Division specialises in the design and development of innovative solutions for specific client needs. Often projects start with requirements analysis of complex issues informed by our collective domain knowledge and evolve through technology to develop prototype manufacture and long-term delivery of equipment and services. The projects always incorporate considerable technical challenges.

Within the division resides our expertise in the fields of location system design, optical sensing, fluidics and data analytics signal processing. With a mixture of radio frequency engineers, analogue electronics engineers, embedded and high-level software engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists and mathematicians we can develop complete systems for clients.

The division has an exciting and diverse range of work and undertakes development projects in three other market sectors, in addition to Defence and Security:

  • Oil and Gas – high performance sensors for difficult environments
  • Consumer – innovation and product development
  • Industrial – sensors, instrumentation and control
